Formal public hearings kick off today into the annual review of vehicle insurance rates.
The Automobile Insurance Rate Board will hold formal public meetings at the Delta Edmonton Centre Hotel, 10222 102 St., to review mandatory premiums.
The two days of hearings, running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will consider written submissions and live presentations by members of the insurance industry and consumers advocates, among others.
There had been rumblings of a requested rate hike from insurance representatives of as high as 40%.
But late last week Alberta's highest court ruled in favour of reinstating a government-ordered cap of $4,500 on people who sue over soft-tissue injury claims.
Given that, some observers now feel, a huge rate hike is less likely.
